ABOUT CHINCHILLA
kkb.si

South American CHINCHILLA is a rodent, mammal, fur-bearing animal which has been bred on farms since 1925, solely due to its valuable and high quality fur. Its natural habitat is in South America (the Andes).
Chinchilla is a nocturnal animal.

For farm breeding of chinchillas a dry, ventilated room is required, cages and a commitment to working with these small animals.
Daily care of chinchillas is compulsory though not time-consuming (50 animals in about 1/2 hour), best in the early hours of evening.
Kept correctly, chinchillas have no odour, are not aggressive or prone to illness.

Females and males live in polygamous groups with one male having 1 - 10 females - most often 5. Females live in separate cages so that they cannot visit each other, while the male has free access to all females through a special tunnel.

Females mate at the age of 7 - 8 months. Gestation is 111 days long and litter sizes are from 1 to 6, on average 2 to 4. The female can mate the same day after giving birth. The young are suckled for about 7 weeks when they are separated from their mother and put into their own cages.
Fur is ripe at the age 7 to 8 months when it can be removed.
The price of fur varies between US$ 25 and 50$.
The most searched for types are standard and black velvet while some other mutations can also be interesting.

CHINCHILLA BREEDING
kkb.si

A FUTURE BREEDER MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:

1. Ensure the best quality animals for breeding
2. Appropriate dry and ventilated room with an ideal temperature of 18 to 22°C
3. Financial capacity in the first year
4. Affection for breeding these animals

HUMIDITY AND DRAFT ARE HARMFUL

If you fail to meet these requirements we do not recommend you to breed chinchillas and cannot guarantee you success.

Dry, easy to ventilate rooms such as semi-cellars, garages, brick, woodsheds, rearranged stables, additional rooms and other.

To breed about 50 female chinchillas you need about 9 sq. m. of surface with a heating facility for winter.

The initial investment is substantial and exceeds earnings as most of the profit must be reinvested for expansion of the business to reach an optimum level. Only after some time, the ratio between the revenue and expense changes in favour of the revenue.

Breeding is appropriate for pensioners, disabled, children (no physical strain).
